Exciting News - Part One

Mon March 02 2009, 10:57:13

Ex-student and current part time teacher, Gavin Tsang, has made it to the West End.

Gavin Tsang, 23, has been asked to join the company for the West End production of The King and I. As yet his role is unassigned but Gavin is very excited about his West End debut.

“I only started dancing after watching Patric Swayze in Dirty Dancing. It was the finale sequence that made me think - I want to do that!“ Gavin explained. So at the ripe old age of 16 Gavin sought out dance lessons.

Gavin did a workshop with Jesse Santos in Shrewsbury and although he wanted to perform more commercial/hip hop style dancing Jesse wisely advised Gavin to do Ballet and Modern.

“I didn’t want to do ballet and modern…I had no interest in anything but street and commercial dance. But Jesse explained that the technical aspects of ballet and modern would be invaluable if I wanted to dance for a career.“

Gavin joined MDDC in 2004 and it was fellow students Christian and Stephania that changed his whole perspective about studying ballet and modern.

“Christian and Stephania totally opend my mind the idea of self-expression through movement. I didn’t realize that commercial dance needs the back up and training gained through studying other forms of dance and now I love ballet and modern so much I have been guest teaching at MDDC until gaining this contract.“

Going from untrained dancer to fully trained dance teacher with a West End role in just seven short years does highlight the dedication and committment Gavin has put into his chosen career. When asked if he had any advice for anyone interested in a career in dance he had only this to say:

“Study hard, be determined, technique is everything. Studying ballet, modern and many other forms of dance has helped me to express more fully through movement.“

All of us at MDDC wish Gavin well for the future, he obviously has the the determination to succeed. Well done, Gavin.
